If you want a new fishing adventure, you should try tuna fishing.

These large, powerful fish come in many shapes and a range of sizes. The list of tuna species is a rainbow of color and design, but they all have one thing in common: a sleek, powerful body that makes them one of the most exciting fish in the water.

World Record Tuna

Just how big are tuna? Take a look at the world record tuna and you’ll see how impressive these fish can get!

What’s the Largest Tuna Species?

To understand the significance of the largest tuna ever caught, you should first understand the various types of tuna, including the largest species. “Tuna” doesn’t actually describe a single species, but instead describes a group of fish that includes numerous subspecies, including albacore, skipjack, and yellowfin. This is similar to how there are many types of sharks or bass.

According to the World Wildlife Fund, the largest tuna species is the Atlantic bluefin tuna. This species can live up to 40 years and often reaches weights over 1,000 pounds. These fish can grow as long as 9 feet in length; combined with their whopping size, they are a formidable opponent when hooked on the end of a line.

Other tuna fish are certainly not small. The southern bluefin, which is closely related to the Atlantic species, is also a large fish that can create an exciting fishing challenge.

By comparison, albacore, which is a type of tuna, seems small. These fish “only” reach 4 feet in length and nearly 90 pounds. So while they don’t weigh as much as a small car, they are still a popular fish.

World Record Tuna

As you may have guessed, the world record tuna is an Atlantic bluefin. In 1978, an angler off Nova Scotia caught a massive bluefin weighing almost 1,500 pounds. While there have been longer tuna fish caught, this is believed to be the heaviest tuna ever brought in by an angler. This fish is recognized as the world record Atlantic bluefin, and it’s believed that no tuna of a larger size has ever been caught.
