Everything You Need to Know About Florida Snook

Florida offers some of the most diverse, exciting, and engaging fishing in the United States. You can catch everything from hefty largemouth bass to massive blue marlin. There is no shortage of options for the motivated angler.

One of the most popular gamefish in Florida is the snook, an aggressive coastal fish that creates a splendid angling opportunity for people of all skill levels.

Whether you live in Florida or you’re making a trip to this fishing paradise, if you enjoy fishing, you need to spend some time in pursuit of Florida snook.

What is the “Snook”?

Snook is one of the most visibly distinct fish in the water. It has an elongated body, concave snout, and protruding lower jaw, giving it the appearance of a sleek predator, which it certainly is. The most distinguishable feature is the black lateral line, which is formed by dark scales that extend from the skull to the tail fin.

Where to Find Snook in Florida?

Snook are a nearshore species that generally prefers to hang around structures. They tend to live and hunt near the shore and around coastal waters, where food is abundant and they can find decent shelter and hiding spots, such as wrecks, reefs, bridge piers, and other structures.

Snooks can tolerate both fresh and saltwater, so they are often found in warmer freshwater channels during the winter months.

When is Florida Snook-Fishing Season?

In the state of Florida, snook management is divided into two zones. To the east is the Atlantic region, which covers the northeastern corner of the state down to most of Miami-Dade county. The other region is the Gulf region, which covers the panhandle to the west, down the Gulf Coast to the Florida Keys and the Everglades.

Understanding the laws and regulations in each area is crucial for anyone who wants to pursue Florida snook.

Regulations can change, so always check for updated and current laws, but currently in the Atlantic region snook fishing is closed from December 15th through January 31st, while there is also a summer closure that lasts from June 1st through August 31st. As long as you are outside of these dates, you can fish for Florida snook in the Atlantic region.

In the Gulf region, there are small zones that are regulated with more attention. Most notably, high-traffic areas like Tampa Bay and Sarasota Bay, which tend to receive more fishing pressure, are more likely to be regulated and restricted. In Sarasota, for example, snook remains catch-and-release only until May 31st, 2022.

Florida requires a snook permit. However, you should check regulations before making the purchase, as refunds are not available if you purchase a permit out of season.
